Beehive Chamber Series: Love's Keen Sting

  • Signup via Groupmuse for Address Portland, ME 04101 United States (map)

The music of Mozart and Beehoven is at the heart of the chamber music canon, and classical music as a whole. Both composers were known for their larger-than-life personalities; their tempers and passions are the stuff of legends. As with all great artists, this comes through in their creative output, and both Mozart’s Quartet No. 16 and Beethoven’s Op. 74 “Harp” Quartet are prime examples of this expressivity. Beethoven’s “Harp” was nicknamed shortly after its composition, both for the harp-like pizzicato in the first movement and for the romanticism associated with the instrument. Written in 1809, shortly after Napoleon’s invasion of Vienna, Haydn’s death, and Beethoven’s marriage proposal to Therese Malfatti and subsequent rejection, “Harp” captures the tumultuous emotions of the composer and the time he was living in.
