Time TBD: Op-Ed

In the age of “fake news,” polarization, and unprecedented access to information, it can be hard to distinguish truth from noise, and from prevailing public opinion. We hear opinions presented as facts and bigotry disguised as “free speech.” For Op-Ed, Palaver Strings joins forces with Warp Trio to perform music by those whose voices have been suppressed and underrepresented in the government, justice system, and media as well as in the concert hall. Our program features Dabke for String Orchestra by Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom, Florence Price’s Five Folk Songs in Counterpoint based on African-American spirituals, and Akenya Seymour’s Fear the Lamb, commissioned by Palaver Strings in 2019, which addresses the murder of Emmett Till. We will also premier a new work by Warp Trio’s own violinist and composer Josh Henderson, which will grapple with the legacy of public figures such as Assata Shakur. Op-Ed holds space for reflection on the struggle for equity and just representation, both in the classical music canon and the world at large.
